Ice Reconnaissance

Before you can deal with the problems associated with ice you have to detect its presence. There are many ways to accomplish this, aircraft, satellites, support vessels, and radar. The correct choice depends on the type and location of your operations.

If your operation is near a population base, or the project is a long-term operation, then aircraft reconnaissance is often the best solution. Dedicated ice reconnaissance aircraft are capable of providing real-time ice information for both strategic and tactical ice management. Aircraft reconnaissance can also provide a cost effective way of assessing ice conditions prior to operational startup.
Satellite Solutions

If your location is remote and not easily accessible, then satellites may hold the solution. Both the Canadian RADARSAT and the European ERS 2 radar satellites are capable of detecting and mapping icebergs and sea ice in remote corners of the world. PAL Environmental Services can provide ice and iceberg distribution maps for operational support or project planning using satellite images.

Depending on the location and duration of the project, there are many other methods of ice detection and monitoring available. These can range from a simple computer-processing enhancement for marine radar to a large shore-based HF radar system that is capable of detecting and tracking ice out to 200 miles from shore. PAL Environmental Services is experienced with many different systems and can provide assistance in designing and implementing a detection system that is right for your project.

PAL Environmental Services has worked with many clients, designing and implementing ice detection and management plans that utilize cost effective technologies to assist in the completion of numerous offshore projects in some of the world’s harshest environments.
